Hiring a Car or Minibus for the Six Nations Rugby Tournament

For many, it’s the highlight of the sporting year, and this year’s rugby union Six Nations tournament kicks off on Friday 2 February when France take on Ireland in Paris.

With matches taking place in London, Paris, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Dublin and Rome, the competition sees large numbers of fans criss-crossing around Europe in sizeable parties that make each match as much a social occasion as it is a sporting one.

And it won’t just be supporters of Ireland, France and Italy jetting into the UK to follow their teams – such is the draw of the Six Nations that many expats also return home to get their annual fix of their favourite sport.

With many of these fans arriving at one of London’s airports, the next decision is going to be how to get to the match itself. For those landing at Heathrow and going to a match at Twickenham, this won’t be a major problem – after all, the two are only separated by five or six miles! – but in all other cases it’s going to be a major consideration.

Whichever group you’re in, your travelling experience could be far better by hiring a car or minibus as opposed to using public transport.

Why Hire a Car or Minibus rather than use Public Transport?

Public Transport or car Rental?

Whichever UK ground you’re heading for and whatever the type or size of your group – and, as we’ve already pointed out, rugby fans do often travel in groups! – hiring a car or minibus is going to represent a far more affordable and flexible solution than flights or train tickets for each traveller.

Apart from anything else, it means you can build in other activities before and/or after the game itself, making it even more convenient if you’re making a full weekend of it. Just remember to nominate a designated driver who you can trust to be safe and sober!

Getting to the Grounds

Chances are that there’ll be plenty of people travelling from the London area to get to games at Murrayfield in Edinburgh, where Scotland host France and England, and the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, where Wales will play at home against Scotland, France and Italy. Meanwhile, England have two home fixtures, against Wales and Ireland.

Twickenham Stadium

Twickenham Rugby stadium.

Twickenham – the home of English rugby – is about 11 miles west of central London. It may be easy to get to from Heathrow, but is a lot more problematic if you’re flying into any of London’s other airports, with no direct train links. Driving yourself, therefore, is a good alternative. You’ll need to pre-book well in advance to be able to park at the stadium on match days, so you might be better off parking in nearby towns like Staines or Ashford, from where you can get a quick train to the stadium.

Murrayfield Stadium

Scotland’s stadium at Murrayfield is a relatively easy walk from the centre of Edinburgh. But for those travelling from the London area, it’s getting to Edinburgh itself that will be the issue. There are direct trains and flights from London, but how convenient – or affordable – either of those will be for a group of you is another matter. The drive is relatively simple – it’s motorways all the way – and is likely to take about eight hours. As with any capital, parking can be a problem close to the stadium, but there are several park & ride options you can take advantage of, from which regular bus services run into the city centre.

Principality Stadium

When aiming to get to Wales’ Principality Stadium – in the heart of Cardiff city centre – driving becomes by far the most straightforward option. It’s only a 3.5 hour drive from London, with the bonus of driving across the Severn Bridge on the way. As with the other cities, it’s best to plan your parking in advance. There’s a convenient park & ride option at the Toys ‘R’ Us car park at the International Sports Village.
